Looking for God
May 24, 2017 12:37 PM PDT

When in Athens, Paul spoke about the unknown God. He encouraged his listeners to look within themselves and become aware of the God in whom "we live, move and have our being." Our own challenge is to look for God in every aspect of our lives and not just in the expected or traditional places we might find God. Some deliberate actions that heighten our awareness of God include kindness, respect, empathy and love. Praying for one another, enjoying the beautiful spring flowers, and appreciating our friends are also ways of knowing that God is always with us and loving us.

Too often the church uses sayings attributed to Jesus to exclude, and too often the church has emphasized doctrine at the expense of relationship. The Rector pushes back....

"The Gate, the Guide, and the Crossing"

RECORDED, Sunday, May, 07/17

There's something about crossing borders -- officially leaving one place, to enter another -- that seems to generate anxiety and raise stress levels in most of us. There's a reason there are so many customer service attendants at airports! Perhaps it's his recognition of this all-too-human quality that leads Jesus to call himself the Gate, and the Shepherd (or Guide), when he invites us to journey through/with him to an undiscovered country -- from life, to Life Abundant.

"But we had hoped..."

Luke 24:13-35 - The Road to Emmaus

The words "But we had hoped he was the one..." spoken by the two travelers on the road to Emmaus carry all of the dashed hopes and deep despair that we experience when crucial hopes have collapsed and we feel overwhelmed by disappointment. Like the two followers of Jesus, we might even find it impossible to see or recognize God. But what happens when Jesus appears with us, not demanding or reprimanding, sitting down at the table and taking the bread, blessing it, breaking it open, and giving it to us?

"Give Peace a Chance"

RECORDED, Sunday, April,23/17
The first words Jesus spoke to his frightened disciples following his resurrection were "Peace be with you." In fact, he says it to them three times, clearly wanting them to get the message. Inspired by Jesus' example this morning, we consider how we, too, might choose to respond with words and acts of peace when our own lives fall apart and we wonder what to do to heal and repair them.

...and alleluia is our song. Singing alleluia, an act of celebration, defiance, joy, struggle, life, death and hope. The Rector considers our call to be true to resurrection in the light of our Baptismal calling to a ferocious faith!

Perspectives

Recorded Maundy Thursday, April 13, 2017

When Jesus washes the feet of his friends he can physically see them from a different perspective. This desire to change perspective is throughout the ministry of Jesus. What is truly revealed is the God "on high" has taken every step possible to be among us. There is nothing, not "high" or "low," here or there, now and then, that separates us from the love of God. Jesus is right in the middle of us and we are right in the middle of God's love.

Domination

Recorded Palm Sunday, April 9, 2017

Our readings remind us that Christ's way of doing things was both at odds with the domination of empire and in line with the Old Testament prophets.
In hearing these stories we are challenged as individuals and as a church to question our complicity in the forces of domination and privilege and enter into the story of Christ turning it all upside down.

RECORDED, Sunday, April, 02/17

This Fifth Sunday in Lent, scripture gives us two stories of new life in anticipation of Easter around the corner. We are reminded by these and other stories that Death does not get the last word -- God gets the last word, and that word is always Life.

"The Iron Church"

RECORDED, Sunday, March, 26/17

When dock-workers in January, 1860 unloaded pallets of cast iron beams and sheets of corrugated metal at Victoria Harbour, who could have imagined such ordinary cargo would become a remarkable, modern church? When Samuel passed over Jesse's seven older sons, and instead poured a kingly anointing on the head of David, a young shepherd-boy, who could have imagined the great leader he would become? With these and other stories, we are reminded today that God "does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart."
